Thomas Houghtaling was born 1805 in Hurley, and was shown on the Hurley census every year from 1830 through his death. He is thought to be the son of Jeremiah, Jr Hooghteeling (1790-1872) and his wife Elizabeth (1792-1829), who was resident in Hurley 1820 but removed to Esopus Township afterwards. Thomas is also the grandson of Jeremiah (1757-1820). He married Elizabeth Catherine Hendricks (1803-1882) circa 1826. They had the following children: John H (1832-1917); Mary C (b.1844); and Elizabeth A (b.1844).
