WALTER MOORE, ALTON RESIDENT SINCE 1902, DIES

SUCCUMBS AT AGE OF 75 AFTER LINGERING ILLNESS

The death of Walter Moore, 75, a resident of Alton since 1902, occurred this morning at 9:30 o'clock in St. Anthony's Infirmary after a long illness. Moore had been removed from his residence at 919 Hampton Street on Monday to the Infirmary. His death had been expected at any time during the past week.

Walter Moore was a native of Ohio, being born in Mercer County on Oct. 2, 1864. He came to Alton soon after the turn of the century as a lineman for the Bell Telephone Company at a time when an extensive ice storm had wrecked poles and lines of telephone and electric companies over a great expanse of territory.

Moore worked with the lineman until the storm damage was cleared up. Meantime, he had met his brother-in-law and sister, Mr. and Mrs. William Thomas, who had come to Alton from Muncie, Ind., the year before. Thomas, then a glassblower, induced his brother-in-law, Moore, to take a place in the glass factory. Moore decided to make the change and took a place as a packer in the Alton plant of Illinois Glass Co. where he worked until the company retired him on ta pension only a few years ago.

Moore's first wife [Eliza Thomas Cavanaugh] had died before he came to Alton. In 1905 he was married to Miss Annie McFetridge of Alton, who died and was buried here last July 9.

Two sons by his first marriage are surviving - Elmer Moore of Elvins, Mo., and Charles E. Moore whose whereabouts are unknown to Alton relatives. A daughter, Mrs. Ethel Smith, died about 20 years ago. Two sisters, Mr.s Florence Thomas of Alton, and Mrs. Dora Baker of De Soto, Ind., also survive. Arthur Thomas of Clawson street, is a nephew.

The funeral will be held Monday at 2 p.m., at Streeper funeral home. The body will be at the funeral home where friends may call after 5 pm., Saturday. Burial will be in Oakwood Cemetery.
