Professional Sports Team Owner. A native of Edmonton, Alberta, he was the owner of the National Hockey League's St. Louis Blues hockey franchise from 1983 to 1986, and co-owner of the Canadian Football League's Toronto Argonauts from 1988 to 1991. In 1991, Ornest sold the Argonauts to Bruce McNall, hockey great Wayne Gretzky, and actor and comedian John Candy. Ornest, also founded the Pacific Coast Hockey League's Vancouver Canadians minor league baseball franchise, refereed in the American Hockey League, played minor-league baseball, and was an NHL linesman. At the time of his death in 1998, at the age of 75, Ornest was the deputy managing director and the largest shareholder of the Hollywood Park Racetrack.
