Guaymas Municipality
Sonora, Mexico
Death: Oct. 19, 1945
Mexico City
Cuauhtémoc Borough

President of Mexico. He was an organizer, leader and was a general in the battles, against Victoriano Huerta and then against Pancho Villa and his rebel forces. He became Governor of Sonora, in 1917, and appointed secretary of commerce, labor and industry, in the cabinet of Mexico President Venustiano Carranza. He served as secretary of foreign relations in the provisional government, in 1920 and was secretary of the interior under Mexico President Obregón, (1920-24). In 1924, he was elected President of Mexico, serving until 1928. While in office, he sponsored agrarian, labor, educational reforms, plus applied provisions that limited the number of clergy and prohibited church schools. He also approved legislation that restricted alien ownership of land and regulated the petroleum industry. After leaving office he was the founder of the Partido Nacional Revolucionario (PND) which became the major Mexican political party. His opposition to the Roman Catholics eventually led to the Cristero War, a civil war between government forces and Catholic rebels. The need for a reaffirmation of revolutionary commitment resulted in Calles to be forced into exile in the United States. He lived in California until 1941, when he was permitted to return to Mexico and spent his last years until his death at age 68. (bio by: John "J-Cat" Griffith)
