Criminal. Born Richard Lenardic in Cleveland, Ohio, Eberling was a petty thief and convicted murderer. He gained fame when he attempted to confess to the 1954 murder of Marilyn Sheppard, the wife of prominent Ohio osteopath Dr. Sam Sheppard. Sheppard himself, was tried, and eventually sent to prison. He died in 1970. Eberling himself was never charged or tried in that case, but he did serve time for several other offences including murder. The Sheppard case was supposedly the inspiration for the 1960s television series, "The Fugitive", which starred David Janssen as Dr. Richard Kimble. A film of the same name and starring Harrison Ford in the role, was released in 1993. Richard Eberling died in prison in 1998.
