Gettysburg Times on August 24, 1968 via the Associated Press: "Custodian On Way To College Degree. Gainesville, Florida (AP) — A former school janitor is on his way to becoming a school administrator. Leonard Lattin, 43, is enrolled in the University of Florida's College of Education and has set his sights on a master's degree. "I got tired of seeing kids fall by the wayside in regular class-rooms," says the one-time custodian in tiny Lake Helen Elementary School near Daytona Beach. That's when he resolved to go back to school in order to help youngsters who are either emotionally disturbed, mentally retarded or just slow learners. Lattin enrolled in Daytona Beach Junior College night classes and, after 3 years, qualified for admission to the University of Florida, from which he expects to receive a bachelor's degree in special education next spring."
