Austin W. Stanford was born in Tippecanoe County, IN and moved to Clay County, IL in 1850. He was united in marriage to Rachael Stanford November 28, 1865.

Four children were born of this union: Homer B., Hattie N,. Hugh D., and Sarah A Stanford.

His wife died May 9, 1879.

He then married Harriet R. Blackburn December 8, 1879. To this union six children were born: Ada R., Norman A., Brooksy E., Nora H., C. Lester, and Loyd E.

Austin was selected as one of the honor guards in charge of bringing President Lincoln's body back to Illinois for burial.
