OBITUARY - ASENATH M. BOZORTH

Died November 30th, 1874

At her residence on Lewis River Cowlitz Co. W.T., Mrs. Asenath M. Bozorth, wife of Mr. John S. Bozorth, aged 40 years. The deceased was daughter of Mr. H. Luelling of Milwakie, Oregon and came to this coast in the year 1847 from Iowa. She was born in Indiana. She was the mother of eleven children four sons and seven daughters. The four sons with six of her daughters and her bereaved husband remain to mourn her loss with a large circle of relatives, friends and neighbours will mourn for the loss of a noble matron from amongst them as daughter, sister, wife, mother, friend and neighbour. She was ever kind and gentle and in this quiet vale where she has resided for over 22 years, she was loved and respected by all as only a good and noble woman can be.

At the time her death she was a worthy and zealous member of Lewis River Grange No. 47 and was buried by them assisted by the Patrons of Rising Sun Grange and La Center Grange accompanied by numerous relative and neighbours on Wednesday, Dec. 2, 1874.

Asenath Martha Luelling was born on 06 Dec 1834 in Newcastle, Henry County, Indiana. She was the third of ten children of William Henderson Lewelling (Henderson Luelling) and Jane Elizabeth Presnall. At age three she moved with her family to Henry County, Iowa, where they helped to establish the town of Salem. In 1847 at age 13 she traveled with her family from Iowa to Oregon by wagon train, and they laid down a fruit tree nursery on the bank of the Willamette River near present-day Milwaukie, Oregon.

On 09 May 1850 at age fifteen she married John Shaw Bozarth in Milwaukie, Clackamas County, Oregon Territory, and they moved to Cowlitz County, Washington, where Asenath lived the rest of her life.

John and Asenath had eleven children, and in addition to the large family, they also provided a home at times for two of Asenath's younger brothers, Levi and Albert.



She married John Shaw Bozarth (1824-1882) on 9 May 1850.
