She was born in Olympia, July 30, 1917 to Lewis E. and Minnie E. (Klumb) Castle. She graduated with honors from Olympia High School in 1934 and then graduated cum laude from Washington State College (now Washington State University) in 1938 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Home Economics. Her scholastic honors included Phi Kappa Phi, Omicron Nu, and Gamma Alpha Chi. She was a member of the Alpha Gamma Delta Sorority, and active in its alumnae groups in Olympia, Hollywood, Palm Beach, Miami, and Mexico City where she was also president of Panhellenic. She was a charter member of the Bel Air (California) Presbyterian Church, and held a variety of Parent Teacher Association offices.
In Mexico City, D.F. she was also president of the Women's Council of the Union Evangelical Church, president of Cosmo Pals International Service Club, and a member of the American Boy Scout Council and the Polanco Bowling League.
Dorothy's passionate hobby was duplicate bridge. She was a Silver Life Master of the American Bridge Club League, winning many national and international trophies. She also won numerous trophies in golf, bowling, and tennis in California and Mexico City.
She returned to Olympia in 1977, and continued with bridge groups, Alpha Gamma Delta, Washington State University Alumni Association, and Olympia High School Class of 1934 Reunions. She became a member of the Merrill Gardens Red Hat Society.
She was married June 8, 1938 to Stanley L. Curlett; they divorced in 1978.
