Washingtonville - James E. "Bucky" Sterns, Esq., a resident of Washingtonville, entered into eternal rest on Thanksgiving, November 23, 2017. He was 85 years old. He was a beloved husband, father, grandfather and friend. The son of Anne Marie Strong and William E. Sterns, Bucky was born in Piermont, New York, but spent his youth and many wedded years in Rockland County. He and his wife, Marilyn, moved to Washingtonville in 1984. He was predeceased by his mother and father; brothers, Richard E. and William J.; sister, Catherine Sterns Raso; grandson John W. Blaine; brother-in-law, Joseph Raso and Theodore Timmerman, Jr.; sister-in-law Margaret Sterns; niece Anne Raso; and nephew Jeffrey Timmerman. He was a parishioner at St. Mary's Church in Washingtonville. Bucky attended St. Ann's School and Nyack High School. He received his B.A., LLB and Juris Doctorate degrees from Fordham University and was admitted to the New York State Bar in 1959. He was a member of the New York State Bar Association. He served in the U.S. Army from 1955 to 1957. An outdoorsman and fly fisherman, Bucky was a fifty-year member of the DeBruce Fly Fishing Club where he served as president, secretary and director. He was an adroit fly tier and gave hundreds of flies to friends and acquaintances and other anglers he met along trout streams. He was a former tying instructor for the Orange County Cooperative Extension and was privileged to tie for the wounded heroes of Project Healing Waters.
Bucky was an avid Yankees and Giants fan with an uncanny memory for games and situations. He was a jazz aficionado and had a keen sense of humor. A voracious reader, he was often found with a book and with one of his dogs beside him. He cared for his wife during her struggle with cancer. He was nurse, chef, keeper of the home, mainstay, guardian angel, best friend and dearest heart. She wouldn't have made it without his devotion and care. He was a sensitive and loving man. His legal career began with the firm of Prindle & McCormack. He was confidential law assistant to Rockland County Court Judge Morton B. Silberman and to New York State Supreme Court Judge Theodore A. Kelly. After retirement he was counsel to Schwall & Becker and Isabel L. Becker, LLC. Survivors include the love of his life, Marilyn, his college sweetheart and wife of 60 years. He is also survived by a son, James and wife, Kathy Lockhart Sterns, of Congers, NY; daughter, Lynne Sophia, and husband, Patrick C. Blaine, of Washingtonville; son, Craig and wife, Kim Collister Sterns, of Sarasota, Florida; and grandchildren Patrick J. Blaine, Eric, Danielle, Brandon and Brett Sterns. Also surviving are nieces, nephews and spouses of the Sterns, Timmerman and Raso families, and sister-in-law, Alda Maria (Nikki) Timmerman. Bucky was loving caretaker of a precious brood of dogs. He cherished all of them, but his favorite was Casey Jones VI, a miniature pinscher that predeceased him. Never was a dog more loving & loved. Visitation will be at the Hannemann Funeral Home on Wednesday, November 29 from 4:00 pm - 8:00 pm. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Ann's Church, 16 Jefferson Street, Nyack on Thursday, November 30 at 11:00am. Interment will follow at Oak Hill Cemetery in Nyack. In lieu of flowers the family requests that donations in Bucky's name be made to Project Healing Waters or to the Blooming Grove Animal Shelter, Rt. 94, Washingtonville, NY.
