Civil War Union Brevet Major General. An 1850 graduate of the United States Military Academy at West Point, New York, when the Civil War began he served as a 1st Lieutenant in the 1st United States Regular Artillery. He later served as Chief Commissary of Subsistence for the Washington, D.C. Depot and on the staff of Major General William T. Sherman's army, rising to the rank of Colonel, US Volunteers. On March 13, 1865 he was brevetted Brigadier General, US Regular Army for "gallant and meritorious services in the campaign terminating with the surrender if the insurgent army under General Joseph E. Johnston", and Major General, US Regular Army for "fairthful and meritorious services in the Subsistence Department during the war". He retired as a Colonel in the Regular Army in 1889.
