Civil War Union Brevet Brigadier General. Born near Paris, France, he graduated from the United States Military Academy at West Point, New York in 1815. His long service in the army was distinguished by his exploration of the Rocky Mountains (1831 to 1835) and service in the Mexican War. The Bonneville Salt Flats of Utah are named for him. During the Civil War he served as Colonel of the 3rd United States Regular Infantry regiment, and as commander of the Benton United States Army Barracks in St. Louis, Missouri. He was retired in 1861, and on March 13, 1865 he was honored with a brevet of Brigadier General, US Regular Army for "long and faithful services in the army."
