Dr. Comstock revised and greatly expanded the earlier genealogy books done by M/G Cyrus B. Comstock who served in the Civil War on the staff of General Grant. This resulted in A History and Genealogy of the Comstock Family in America which was published in 1949. Dr. Comstock is probably best known for this work but his interests and accomplishments were far greater.

He was an architect, physician, surgeon, instructor and an associate director of the Los Angeles County Museum. He had a great interest in entomology and was considered a world expert on the subject of butterflies.

The information below is from California of the South Vol. V, 1933, by John Steven McGroarty, pages 153-154, and only part of it is transcribed here.

"Doctor Comstock is a fellow of the London Entomological Society, and the American Association for the Advancement of Science. He is president of the southern California division of the Science League of America. Additional memberships of importance include the following: the California Academy of Science; the Southern California Academy of Sciences (of which he was president from 1928 to 1929); the Western Society of Naturalists; and the Cooper Ornithological Club."

Dr. Comstock was married three times:

1. Caroline Elizabeth Townsend (22 Apr 1884 - 4 Dec 1939) of Chicago. They were married on 10 Sept 1905 in in William's Bay, Wisconsin. The date of their divorce is not known. She then married William L. Titlow in 1932 but apparently they divorced since she was listed as "Carol T. Comstock" when she died in Santa Barbara. Her obituary in the Los Angeles Times of 5 Dec 1939 has text indicating that "she died after a prolonged illness that she contracted in the Philippines". She was very prominent in musical circles and at one time she had headed the music department of Oxford College in Ohio.

2. Dr. Caroline E. (Sult) Lord (Dec 1882 - 23 June 1926) of Tempe, AZ. She was with her mother in Maricopa County, Arizona on the 1900 census. They were married in Palm Springs on 11 Feb 1921.

3. Ruth Mary Gard (14 Nov 1899 - 20 Sep 1973) of Los Angeles. They were married on 31 March 1928 in Los Angeles.
