Dollie Marie Babcock, 80, died peacefully on Thursday, March 17, 2005, at Flora Pavilion Nursing Home Center. She fought a courageous battle with lung cancer that was diagnosed last summer.

Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Sunday at Frank & Bright Funeral Home in Flora. Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Elmwood Cemetery in Flora.

Mrs. Babcock was born on February 22, 1925, near Iola, the daughter of Myrtle and Delbert Austin Winchester. She married Wilbur Dean Babcock of the Clay City area on October 17, 1942, in Alamogordo, N.M. He preceded her in death on May 13, 1979.

She had lived on various bases where Mr. Babcock was a radio operator in the Army Air Corps. She returned to Flora in early 1945 to await the birth of their first child. When he returned from Iwo Jima in late 1945, they moved to Champaign where he attended University of Illinois. They raised four children and eventually found their way to the Chicago area. After her husband's death, she sold their home in suburban Chicago and returned to Flora. She was admired and respected by her family and her many friends in the Clay County area. She was much loved by her children and grandchildren and will be dearly missed. One of her passions in later years was bingo at the VFW and Eagles, where she was a member. She was also a member of American Legion. Her sense of humor and wise counsel will be missed
by all.

Mrs. Babcock is survived by four children, Linda Creason and her husband, David, of St. Charles, Mo., Phyllis Babcock, of St. Louis, Mo., Steven Babcock, of Lynnwood, Wash., and Russ Babcock, of Flora; two sisters, Helen Whitworth, of Springfield, and Genell Kroeger, of Flora; a
sister-in-law, Irene Winchester, of Flora; and six wonderful grandchildren, Michelle Creason, Teri Humes and her husband, Scott, and Daniel Creason, of St. Charles, Mo., and Lisa, Kristine and Jennifer Babcock, of Lynnwood, Wash.

She was preceded in death by her parents and husband.

Memorials may be made to The Regional Ombudsman
Program in Effingham.
