Aged 30.

HMS ABDIEL (M39) was a Mine Laying Ship, launched in 1940 at Cowes, Isle of Wight, and was commissioned in 1941.
She served in the home fleet, and in the Mediterranean during WW2, and amongst other notable events, was part of a fleet that evacuated troops from Crete on 31 May-1 June 1941.
It had a normal complement of 244.
On operations, it carried 156 mines, and had a max. speed of 40 knots/74kph with a range of 9,300km at 15 knots/28kph.

HMS ABDIEL, commanded by Captain David Orr-Ewing, DSO, was sunk by mines in Taranto harbour, Italy, on 10 September 1943, during Operation Slapstick. The mines had been laid just a few hours earlier by two German torpedo boats (S-54 and S-61), as they left the harbour. Abdiel, carrying troops of the British 1st Airborne Division (6th (Royal Welch) Parachute Battalion), took the berth which had been declined earlier by the captain of the US cruiser USS Boise. Shortly after midnight, two ground mines detonated beneath Abdiel and the minelayer sank in three minutes, with great loss of life among both sailors and soldiers. The 1st Airborne Division lost 58 dead and around 150 injured and 48 crew were lost. There was a rumour that the ship's degaussing equipment [an anti-magnetic mine system] had been turned off to reduce noise and to allow troops to sleep better.
The German attack on the harbour at Taranto, was almost certainly a direct result of the announcement of the Italian Armistice/Surrender the previous day.
