Non-conformist divine. He was active in the temperance Movement for reform and had a far-reaching influence as a dissenters' bishop. Born in Kent, the son of John Vine Hall, author of "A sinner's Friend and was educated at University College, London before attending theological studies at Highbury College, London. After his first pastoral post at Hull, he settled at Surrey chapel. Blackfrairs, London; originally built in 1783 by Rev Roland Hill. In 1859, he was instrumental in raising funds to build a new chapel which opened three years later at a cost of £63.000 pounds. At the outbreak of the American Civil War, he supported the north fundamentally because of the emancipation of slaves. He published " The American War; A Lecture Delivered in London, Oct 20 1862" his first non-theological essay on the subject. His best-known work was perhaps "Come to Jesus" to which four million copies were printed in 40 different languages.
