After his first pastoral post at Hull, he settled at Surrey chapel. Blackfrairs, London; originally built in 1783 by Rev Roland Hill. In 1859, he was instrumental in raising funds to build a new chapel which opened three years later at a cost of £63.000 pounds. At the outbreak of the American Civil War, he supported the north fundamentally because of the emancipation of slaves. He published " The American War; A Lecture Delivered in London, Oct 20 1862" his first non-theological essay on the subject. His best-known work was perhaps "Come to Jesus" to which four million copies were printed in 40 different languages.
