Jack Isaac Ground was born in DeSoto, Texas, the seventh child of eleven children of Tommy Henry Ground and Lina Mary Owen Ground. Jack worked as an auto mechanic after graduating from high school, and in 1933 he joined the Navy and was stationed at Pearl Harbor, Honolulu Hawaii. He re-enlisted in 1937 and met Aileen Thralls while on leave in California when she was only 17. They married in 1939, and she returned with him to Hawaii. He was stationed on the Henderson when Pearl Harbor was bombed. Aileen had their first child, Johnny at the Navy Hospital at Pearl Harbor in March 1941. They returned home to DeSoto, Texas, Jack was a mechanic at Chance Voight and he and Aileen had two more sons, Dennis and Tad.
