Madeline M. York, 88, of Rome, died peacefully on April 3, 2013 at the Masonic Care Community, Utica. Madeline was born in Hull Quebec, Canada, on October 16, 1924, a daughter of Omer and Yvonne Gagnon Berube. Madeline and her family later moved to Syracuse, NY, where she attended school and helped raise her ten siblings after her mother passed away at an early age.
Madeline married the love of her life, James H. York on June 2, 1945 at St. Lucy's Church, Syracuse. James passed away on April 1, 1972.

Madeline was a true matriarch, a devoted mother, sister, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend. Madeline was a member of the "Gals Club" and a past president of the Red Hat Society. Madeline was employed for many years with GrandWay and J.C. Penney. She loved spending time with her family, especially during the holidays, where she was known for her fabulous Christmas cookies. Madeline's hobbies were always centered around her family. Madeline loved to knit, crochet, travel and attend her grandchildren's sporting events and took great pride in each of their accomplishments. Even though she moved from Syracuse many years ago, Syracuse never left her heart. Anybody that came in contact with Madeline during the past month would realize this, because she would recount the most recent Syracuse Orangemen win in vivid detail.

Surviving Madeline are three daughters and one son-in-law: Kathleen York, Marsha and Bruce Beach, Claire Papadimitriou, all of Rome; one son and daughter-in-law, James and Heather York, Camden; four sisters, Rolanda Hewitt, CA, Lucille Tammaro, CA, and twin sisters, Jeanine Sibble, Jeannette Shade, both of Syracuse; four brothers, Paul, Raymond and Richard Berube, all of Syracuse, Maurice Berube, FL.; seven grandchildren, Kelly (Jesse) Tripp, Wake Forest, NC, Alicia Scanlon, Syracuse, Jennifer (Matt) Mogel, Kevin (Alison) Beach, Craig (Tonya) Beach, all of Rome, Steven (Kerry) Bunting, Camden, and Eric York, Arizona; nine great-grandchildren, Kelsey, Emily, Kevin and Abigail Beach, Craig Beach, Connor and Riley Tripp, Dylan and Logan Mogel.

Madeline was predeceased by a sister, Yvette Gombash; three brothers, Henry, Roger and Gerald Berube; a grandson, Bruce Beach; and son-in-law, Klearhos Papadimitriou.

The family would like to especially thank Dr. Guy Wilcox and the staff of the Amherst Wing at the Masonic Care Community for the compassion and loving care that Madeline received during her stay at the Masonic Home.

Funeral services will be held Saturday at 12:30 p.m. at St. Peters Church. Calling hours are Friday 4 to 8 p.m. at Strong-Burns & Sprock Funeral Home, 401 N. George Street, Rome. Interment will take place on Saturday, June 1 at Rome Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to St. Peters Church Memorial Fund.
