I knew Lula all my life but I didn't become her good friend until the last 5 years or so of her life. My parents and I were good friends of her sister Agnes Iler and Lula often attended parties Agnes hosted. Late in her life, Lula proudly showed me photos of her and her friends taken at a baby shower for my mother before I was born. In 1997, when I began going to Freeport more often, I visited Agnes and Lula nearly every time I went. They were both living at "the big house" at Parkview. And what delights they both were. They both still loved going out, dining well, seeing people, and keeping up intellectually. Their favorite TV program was Antiques Roadshow. And of course they both loved playing cards. Nurses at Parkview said Lula played cards the day before she died. Lula was blessed with nearly perfect health in her last years, and she kept all her faculties. What everyone wants. She was a loving and thoughtful friend. The day my mother died she called me and had someone bring her over to the house so she could offer me her condolences. When someone 100 years old does that it's pretty special.
