Lula Ackerman was born September 24, 1900 in Florence Township, Stephenson County, Illinois, the daughter of Frederick and Anna (Borgmann) Kappenman. She graduated from Byron High School, Byron, Illinois and from Mount Morris College, Mt. Morris, Illinois with a degree in teaching. She taught country school before her marriage. On November 27, 1924 she married Walter Ackerman in Rockford, Winnebago County, Illinois. He preceded her in death June 25, 1986 in Freeport, Illinois. (Refer to his obituary in Findagrave.com; he's buried next to Lula in Oakland Cemetery.) Walter and Lula had no children. Lula Ackerman died in Freeport on January 27, 2003. Lula was the last surviving member of her immediate family. She was preceded in death by her parents, brother Ernest Kappenman and sisters Viola (Perry) Lane, Agnes (Roy) Iler, and Mina (Kenneth) Glawe. I knew Lula all my life but I didn't become her good friend until the last 5 years or so of her life. My parents and I were good friends of her sister Agnes Iler and Lula often attended parties Agnes hosted. Late in her life, Lula proudly showed me photos of her and her friends taken at a baby shower for my mother before I was born. In 1997, when I began going to Freeport more often, I visited Agnes and Lula nearly every time I went. They were both living at "the big house" at Parkview. And what delights they both were. They both still loved going out, dining well, seeing people, and keeping up intellectually. Their favorite TV program was Antiques Roadshow. And of course they both loved playing cards. Nurses at Parkview said Lula played cards the day before she died. Lula was blessed with nearly perfect health in her last years, and she kept all her faculties. What everyone wants. She was a loving and thoughtful friend. The day my mother died she called me and had someone bring her over to the house so she could offer me her condolences. When someone 100 years old does that it's pretty special.
