Susan was the first of 9 children born to Clayton and Mary A. G. Harwood Jacobs.

Susan was married twice. Her first marriage was to James H. Minor on November 10, 1857. James was a school teacher and merchant. They had been married 18 years at the time of his death in 1875.

Susan married the second time to William Hubbell on September 3, 1884. He was a widower with five children ranging in age from 5 to 23. William was a prominent citizen of Richmond. He was a successful merchant, agriculturist and stock raiser. He also had banking and coal mining interests. Susan was widowed again when William died in 1898. They had been married 14 years. There were no children born in their marriage.
