Mr. Hay was for many years a practicing attorney in Belleville his office originally having been located in the Court House. He was a first lieutenant in the Civil War and was instrumental in organizing a company in Belleville headed by Captain Robert Halbert.
At the close of the Civil War, Mr. Hay embarked upon the practice of law in St. Louis, where he remained for several years, and then returned to Belleville where he opened a prosperous law office which he operated until about twenty-five years ago, to retire to manage his property interests. He was the owner of extensive farm lands.
Mr. Hay was also instrumental in the organizing of the Harman, Hay and Reis Nail Mill in Swansea, which was operated for a period of about thirty years.
The deceased attorney was born in Belleville, September 20, 1836, a son of Mr. and Mrs. Andrew Hay, nee Emily Morrison. He was united in marriage with Miss Laura V. Mattox, at St. Louis, on February 12, 1867, who preceded him in death.
Mr. Hay leaves to mourn his loss two sons and one daughter:

[Clara] Mrs. Arthur Barker, New Haven, Conn.
Eugene Hay, Belleville, Ill.
One grandchild, Arthur Hay Barker, of Yale University; and one brother C. C. Hay, of New York City, also survive.
The funeral will be held from the family home at 326 North Jackson street to Walnut Hill Cemetery at 2:30 o'clock Tuesday afternoon. Attorney R. D. W. Holder, a close friend, will deliver the oration.
