Zelda was born in Vernal, Utah to Margaret Lillian Ross and Henry Abplanalp. She was the oldest child in the family of seven children. Two of her brothers died with whooping cough when they were just one year old. When the children were small, they family lived in Utahn, which is a little farming community above Duchesne. In Utahn Zelda, Orval and Norma attended school in a one-room log house. As the children grew older it was necessary to move back to Vernal where they could have better schooling.
Zelda started her first year at Uintah High School in the fall of 1921. In January of 1922 her mother passed away leaving five children. Zelda quit school to stay home and take care of the family. After her mother's death it was necessary for her father to go away to get work. The children moved in with an aunt and uncle. The children were grateful for Zelda. She became a second mother to them. Their father worked on construction jobs as a powder man. His job was to dynamite the big rocks and trees out of the way as they were building roads.
In 1924 Zelda went back to high school and graduated in 1926. She met Francis Gardiner and on August 10, 1929 they were married in Vernal. Zelda soon had two children: Jeannine (1931) and Verlin (1933). They were her pride and joy.
Zelda was sick most of 1938. She wanted another baby. The third child was stillborn and then Zelda died.
