George was the son of Albert Frederick Backhaus and his wife, Hattie Smith Backhaus. Sometime between 1940 and 1945, he started using the spelling of "Backus."

In about 1941, George married Mildred M. Kansanback. According to her brother Kenneth's obituary, her parents were Elmer Kansanback and Lillian Steinke.

Whether George and Mildred had any children is unknown at this time. However, I remember my father-in-law, William George Backhaus, talking about George's son, Skip.

I don't know exactly when, but at some point George and Mildred moved to the state of Washington. It was there, in Shelton, that George passed away in 1983. His cause of death was cardiac arrest due to arteriosclerotic heart disease.

His death certificate states that George was cremated at Woodlawn Abbey Crematory in Sumner, Washington. The location of his ashes is unknown at this time.
