John married Lucy Blewett on 17 Nov 1912 in Clark Co., IN. He indicated that he had been married once before and that that marriage ended in death in 1906. John married Jane "Jennie" Clarke on 16 Feb 1891 in Caldwell Co., NC. Jennie was the daughter of N. N. & Susan Clarke.

There is a death record for Jennie Etly in Jefferson Co., KY dated 10 Nov 1906. It states that her cause of death was murder.

"After 15 Years Man Admits To Wife (sic) Murder

Louisville, Ky., Nov. 16 - John B. Etley (sic), on his death bed here tonight, confessed to the murder of his wife, Mrs. Jennie Etley (sic), in Louisville, fifteen years ago. He said he cut his wife's throat with a razor.

Etley (sic) was tried three times. The first time he was given a life sentence. A hung jury resulted in the second trial. The third and last time he was tried he was acquitted. When Etley (sic) was arrested, his step-daughter, Anna Etley (sic) told the police Etley (sic) had killed her mother. She later changed this story and her testimony had much to do in bringing about her step-father's freedom.

The case was one of the most sensational ever tried in local courts."

He can be found on the 1900 census of Caldwell Co., NC. On that census, his wife, Jane. John's children on the 1900 census were - Annie B., David J., Nellie C. & Bula (sic). Beulah can be found living in The Convent of Good Shepherd in Louisville in 1910. Another child of John's was George Richard Etly, born 25 Nov 1905 in Louisville, KY. His daughter, Nellie Collene, married Matthew Huber.
