Joe was PID by his parents, William Henry and Caroline (nee Wearren) Smith, and maternal grandmother, Margaret (nee Jones) Wearren Nave. He was survived by his step-grandfather, Joseph P. Nave, uncle and aunts of Danville, sister, Mrs. Jennie Reiss of Somerset, KY and brother, John Nave Smith of Houston, TX. Orphaned at a young age, he was raised by his maternal grandmother, Mrs. Nave. As a very young man, he mastered the tailor trade, and later moved to Knoxville, TN, where he was foreman of one of the largest wholesale tailoring etablishments of that city. Later he relocated to Memphis, and managed a clothing etablishment. He moved to Knoxville, and became a member of the Knoxville Lodge of Elks, who helped relocate him to Colorado for his declining health due to tuberculosis. He was a member of the Danville Methodist Church. Funeral services were conducted by Rev. J.P. Strother at the home of Mr. Joseph P. Nave on Walnut Street, and interment followed in Bellevue Cemetery. Mr. Joseph W. Smith never married, and had no issue.
