Beachy. - Ananias J. was born near Arthur, Illinois, on March 27, 1889, to Jonas S. and Fannie (Miller) Beachy. He died June 27, 1971, at his home near Kalona, Iowa, at the age of 82 years and 3 months. For several years, father had been afflicted with various infirmities characteristic of old age.
In his youth, he accepted Christ as Saviour and Lord and united with the Old Order Amish Church, where he was faithful to his passing. On Nov. 26, 1914, he was united in holy matrimony to Ella Mae Shetler. To this union were born seven sons and three daughters: Ray, John, Glen, Earl, Fannie (Mrs. Eli C. Miller), Jonas, Joseph, all of Kalona, lowa, Mary (Mrs. David L. Miller), Hutchinson, Kans, Jesse of Cazeniovia, Wis., and Esther (Mrs. Henry Zook), Kalona. Iowa. Other survivors include 75 grandchildren and 18 great grandchildren. He was the first of his immediate family, including grandchildren and great-grandchildren, to be called into eternity. Other survivors include four brothers: Samuel and Ben of Sarasota, Fla.; Ezra of Goshen, Ind.; and Jonas J. of Riverside, Iowa; five sisters: Mrs. Katie Yoder, Mrs. Martha Miller, Mrs. Andy Beachy, Mrs. Dan S. Yoder, all of Kalona, Iowa; and Mrs. Henry Yoder of Millersburg, Ind. He was preceded in death by his parents, a sister, Bertha (Mrs. Sol Miller), and a brother, Josie, who died at three years of age.
The family will remember Father as a man of firm convictions and living faith. He had a concern for the spiritual welfare of his descendants, frequently mentioning them in family prayers. He was also keenly interested in the wider work of the church both present and past. He took an active interest in the area of refugee settlement following World War II. He also had long-standing involvement in the work of church publications (including the Herold der Wahrheit), He was instrumental with others in founding Amish Mennonite Colonization, Inc. and served as the first secretary-treasurer of this organization. He believed that history was important in what it can teach us about the present and future. He sought to preserve the historical record of the Amish and Mennonites of Kalona, Iowa, and surrounding areas through the writing of various articles and accumulation of dates and statistics.
It is not our desire to glory in the works of man, but we would rather seek to glorify the Lord of his faith and to follow the example of our earthly father wherein he followed Christ.
