Parents were John Howerth and Elizabeth Amelia Bright.
He was the only son among their 12 children, only 7 of whom survived to adulthood.
Married in Wayne Co, Illinois on 16 August 1881 to Cora Olive Cissna. This couple had no children.
1885 - earned bachelor of arts degree from Valparaiso University in Valparaiso, Indiana.
1889 - admitted to the Illinois state bar (for practice of law)
1893 - earned B.A. degree from Harvard University
Earned M.A. and Ph.D. degrees from University of Chicago by 1889.
Asst. Professor of Sociology and Dean of the College for Teachers at the University of Chicago until 1912.
Professor of Education and Director of University Extension at the University of California - Berkley from 1912 - 1921.
During World War I, in 1919, served as a member of the educational corps with the A.E.F. in France.
Head of the Dept. of Sociology at Colorado State College, Greeley, CO from 1921 - 1930. In 1930 he retired as head of the department, but continued as an active professor emeritus of the department until 1934.
A liberal in politics and social and economic thought, Dr. Howerth travelled extensively studying social and political conditions in foreign countries. He lectured extensively outside the college. He delivered a commencement essay at Harvard University. He was the author of several books and many magazine and journal articles on educational and sociological subjects. Among his books were Art of Education (published 1912), Work and Life (published 1913), and The Theory of Education (published 1926).
He had been active and in excellent health until the day before his death; he was stricken with a fatal heart attack. He is buried in Linn Grove Cemetery, beside his wife Cora Olive (Cissna)Howerth (1864 - 1966).
