Pastor of St. Andrew's Catholic Church in Pasadena, California, for 27 years, from 1956 to 1982. The son of Timothy and Julia (O'Neil) Hourihan, Rev. Monsignor James Hourihan was ordained from All Hallows College in Dublin on June 21, 1931, and he came to Los Angeles from Ireland that same year. He first served as an assistant pastor at St. Andrew's in Pasadena, and he then served at Sacred Heart parish and at St. Alphonsus parish, both in Los Angeles. In 1946, he was the founding pastor of St. Luke's parish in Temple City, where he served for 10 years before going back to Pasadena. He was honored as a Monsignor by Pope St. John XXXIII in 1962. He was a close friend of Cardinal Timothy Manning, and he is remembered for his caring service to the sick and bedridden. Two of his brothers were Catholic priests of the Carmelite Order. From his obituary in the Los Angeles Times, July 9, 1997:

"HOURIHAN, Monsignor James, 90, Pastor Emeritus of St. Andrew's Church, Pasadena, Ca., passed away July 8, 1997. Born Dunmanway, Co. Cork, Ireland, January 4, 1907. Survived by his brother, Father Brendan Hourihan, O. Carm., Middletown, New York; and preceded in death by two brothers, Father Emmanuel Hourihan and Mr. Timothy Hourihan, N.T. He served as Pastor of St. Andrew's Pasadena from 1956 until 1982, and remained as Pastor Emeritus until the present. Funeral services will take place at St. Andrew's Church, Pasadena. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by Cardinal Mahony, the Bishops and Priests of the Los Angeles Archdiocese, Friday, July 11, at 11 a.m. Interment will take place immediately following the Mass at Calvary Cemetery.
