Janet married Rondo Millward Barrus on February 29, 1944, in the Logan LDS Temple. They were married 63 years when Rondo died in 2008. They began their married life in Pocatello, Idaho while Rondo worked for three years at the Naval Ordinance Gun Plant on guns used on battleships during World War II. After the war, they moved to Sugar City, Idaho where Rondo was first employed at the Sugar City Mercantile. A few years later, Rondo began teaching at Sugar-Salem High School the subjects of band, choir, and social studies until he retired. Their home was filled with music.
When her children were older, Janet went back to school to earn a bachelor’s degree; she graduated from Brigham Young University in 1973. She taught Elementary School for 17 years. After her retirement, Janet served on the Sugar-Salem School Board for nine years; she served the last two years as chairman of the board.
Janet’s greatest love was for her husband and family. She especially loved family Christmas traditions. She enjoyed cooking and was a gracious hostess. For many years, Janet worked hard in their lot-sized vegetable garden during the summers, and she prized having beautiful flowers; she was excited by the birds in their yard and knew each species.
She made many quilts for family members throughout her life and crocheted countless treasured items. She was happiest when serving other people.
Janet tenderly took care of Rondo when he was home-bound for the last years of his life. Janet and Rondo’s love, marriage, and dedication to each other is a great memory and example for all their descendants.
Janet always served faithfully in many callings in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints throughout her life. She served for years as a Primary chorister. She also served many times as a teacher or a leader in the auxiliaries and once as a Relief Society President.
