Prussian Artist. A prominent Rococo painter, she was the daughter of a portrait painter at the court of King Frederick William I of Prussia. As a teenager, she was taught to paint by her father. She focused on painting all genres and also did history paintings, experimenting with Dutch-style genre scenes similar to those of artist Gerard Dou. Her best known work at that time was the "Game of Shuttlecock" (1741). In 1742 she married a Berlin, Germany innkeeper and put her painting on hold, to help her husband run the business. In 1760, she resumed her career and left Berlin for Stuttgart to paint at the court of Duke Karl Eugen, Duke of Wurttemberg, completing eighteen paintings in the shortest time for the castle gallery. In 1762 she became an honorary member of the Stuttgart Académie des Arts, and in 1765 she went to The French Royal Academy of Painting and Sculpture in Paris, France and displayed her work. However, her career in Paris was unsuccessful, becoming heavily in debt, and she returned to Berlin and became the portrait painter to Frederick II (Frederic the Great) of Prussia. Additionally, she painted portraits of eight Prussian royals for Empress Catherine II of Russia (Catherine the Great). In her final years, her eyesight began to fail, and she died at the age of 61. About 200 of her works survive, and she painted at least 85 verified portraits.
