Patrick Bodkin, 88 years of age, passed away at his home in Cherryvale, Kansas, July 5, 1936, of an attack just after retiring in the evening. Mr. Bodkin while in failing health for several months was able to attend mass Sunday morning and spent the day visiting with family and friends. Patrick Bodkin was born at Belcarra, Mayo Co., Ireland, March 10, 1848, and passed away July 5, 1936, in Cherryvale, Kansas. He came to America December 26, 1862, settling in Scranton, Pennsylvania, where he enganged in mining and where on April 5, 1874, he married Catherine [Cathern] Agnes Murry [Murray] in the Scranton cathedral. In 1877 with his family he moved west locating first at Fredericksburg, Missouri, and in the following year moved to Pottawatomie county, Kansas, where for thirty-one years he lived near Blaine, the first home being a typical Kansas dugout. In March 1909 Mr. Bodkin moved to a farm five miles north of Cherryvale and later moved to the residence in town where his death occurred. Mr. Bodkin in his pioneer days became a member of the A. O. U. W. lodge and has been active and enthusiastic in its benefit and was still financial recorder of Cherryvale Lodge No. 91 at the time of his death. Mrs. Bodkin passed away September 8, 1927. To their marriage were born fifteen children; four sons, John, Thomas, Peter and Michael preceded their parents in death while the following still survive: R. T. Bodkin, Mrs. Winifred Prebble, Miss Celia Bodkin, all of Salt Lake City, Utah; Mrs. Margaret Johnson, Ponca City, Oklahoma; J. C. Bodkin of Spokane, Washington; Mrs. Catherine [Cathern] Hinson, Washington, D. C.; Mrs. Charles Schabel, Neodesha, Kansas; Mrs. Mary Busby, of the home; Miss Gail Bodkin, Coffeyville, Kansas; A. E. Bodkin of Oklahoma City, Okla. There are also fifteen grandchildren. The funeral party left Cherryvale early Thursday morning, arriving at Westmoreland, Kansas, Thursday afternoon, where the remains were taken to the home of Mr. and Mrs. James Finan life long friends of Mr. Bodkin and his family. On Friday morning at nine o'clock requiem mass was sung by Rev. S. F. Healy in St. Columbkill's church at Blaine and interment made in the family plot in St. Columbkill's cemetery. The pallbearers were: Fred Ford, J. Caffrey, Ted Harrington, H.F. Higgins, Mike Monahan [Minihan], John Rabbitt.
