US Marine Lance Corporal Joe Louis Lockhart McGill was a casualty of the Vietnam War. As a member of the US Marine Corps and a Rifleman, LCPL McGill served our country until May 9th, 1968 in Quang Tri, South Vietnam. He was 21 years old and was married. It was reported that Joe died from small arms fire or grenade. His body was recovered. LCPL McGill is on panel 57E, line 029 of the Vietnam Memorial Wall in Washington D.C. He served our country for one year.
Who didn't like Joe? How could anyone who knew him not love the guy? Always smiling and making us laugh. Always a word to ease the tension. THE SEIGE AT KHE SANH: On 26 December 1967 the 3rd Battalion, 26th Marines, took responsibility for garrisoning Hill 881 South, one of the several peaks which surrounded the Khe Sanh Combat Base. 3/27 stayed on Hill 881S throughout the siege of Khe Sanh; they didn't leave 881S until 18 April 1968. During this period of bitter, bloody fighting 3/26 had 82 men killed in action and hundreds more wounded. LCPL McGill was one of them.
Neighbor: I honor you this day! Joe, I was seven when you went to war. I can remember when you were laid to rest. It is still vivid in my mind.
