Leo Platt, of Boca Raton, Fla., and formerly of Roanoke, Va., died January 26, 2007. Dr. Platt was born in Norfolk, Va. on April 3, 1911. He attended Roanoke College and graduated from the Pennsylvania College of Optometry with honors in 1934. Dr. Platt practiced optometry in Roanoke until his retirement in 1979. He was actively involved at Temple Emanuel, and served as president 1952-53. He was listed in Southern Jewry Who's Who. He served on the Roanoke Valley Community United Fund, was a board member of the SW Va. Children's Home Society and was its president in 1967. He was appointed regional coordinator for The Great Books Foundation 1960-67, and he led reading groups for Great Books for 21 years. He served on the Roanoke Library Board for over 20 years. Dr. Platt was the beloved husband of Dorothy, who predeceased him in 1983. He was the devoted father of Carolyn Zoll (Ron) and Margaret Kottler of Boca Raton, Fla.; adoring grandfather to Michael Kottler (Laura), Ethan Kottler (Taleen), Jennifer Garza, and Debbie Shugrue (Mike); caring great-grandfather of Jacob and Emma Kottler and Cassidy and Sierra Shugrue; cherished uncle of many nieces and nephews; and a loving companion to Mildred Barth of Danville, Va. for the last 23 years. Funeral services will be Sunday, February 4, 2007, 2 p.m., at Temple Emanuel. Interment will follow in Temple Emanuel Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Leo Platt Adult Education Fund, Temple Emanuel, 1163 Persinger Rd., SW, Roanoke, Va. 24015.
