Mary Marguerite Sweeney, 92, Bardstown, died Sunday, Oct. 17, 2010, at her home. She was born on March 31, 1918, in Holy Cross. She was a member of the St. Gregory Catholic Church. She worked at Tom Moore and Heaven Hill Distilleries before retiring after 25 years of service at the Jim Beam Distillery. She was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph Bernard Sweeney; three sons, Joe Lee Sweeney, Jimmy Sweeney, and Paul Sweeney; a grandson, Bobby Downs; her parents, William Alonza and Anna Harriet Lyvers Newton; three sisters, Gertrude Payne, Lorraine Sims, and Lillian Mattingly; and seven brothers, Oscar Newton, Thelis Newton, Perman Newton, J.B. Newton, Adrian Newton, Ethel Newton and Spencer Newton. Survivors include three daughters, Dianne Edelen, Gayle Sweeney, and Judy Jones, all of Bardstown; three sons, Bill Sweeney, Pat Sweeney, and Tim (Debbie) Sweeney, all of Bardstown. 23 grandchildren, 37 great-grandchildren, and a great-great grandchild; and several nieces and nephews. Visitation is 2-8 p.m. Tuesday and 9 a.m. Wednesday at Greenwell-Houghlin-Northside Funeral Home. A prayer service will be 7 p.m. Tuesday by Deacon Joe Livers. The funeral is 10 a.m. Wednesday at the St. Gregory Catholic Church in Samuels with burial in St. Joseph Cemetery, Bardstown. The Rev. John Schwartzlose will be the celebrant. Joseph L Greenwell Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
