Fred was my brother. He was just 20 when he was killed, I was 15. Not a day goes by without him in my thoughts. I have a son named after him. God, I just wish he were still here. The 1st Battalion, 9th Marines, lost four men to enemy artillery or mortar fire on 01 March 1968: LCpl Frederick B. Link, Newton, NC, Charlie Company, was one of them. David Link.

Fred, Today 40 years ago you were taken from us. Not a day goes by that I don''t think about you. I would love for you to meet my family, Elaine , Freddy, and Katherine. I think you would have liked them, especially Freddy(your namesake), he is like you in a lot of ways. After 40 years we finally got some answers about your tour in Nam. Just 6 weeks ago, I came in touch with Eric Bergland, your friend and comrade in arms. He shared a lot with me about your time in Albany and in Nam. He has helped us get more closure with your death. After a long phone conversation, I came to understand a lot about all of this. It seems easy to see why you and Eric became friends, just talking to him, it is like I have know him a long time. I am sharing his story with everyone that I can who knew you. Well, brother I miss you, but I know that if you had made it home how difficult your life would have been. I know that you are with God now and that is all the consolation that I need. Love, David Link, 2101 Smyre Farm Road, Newton NC, 28658.
