US Marine Lance Corporal Frederick Beard Link was a casualty of the Vietnam War. As a member of the Marine Corps, LCPL Link served our country until March 1st, 1968 in Quang Tri, South Vietnam. He was 21 years old and was not married. It was reported that Frederick died from artillery fire. His body was recovered. Frederick was born on October 9th, 1946 in Newton, North Carolina. LCPL Link is on panel 42E, line 019 of the Vietnam Memorial Wall in Washington D.C. He served our country for 2 years.
Fred was my brother. He was just 20 when he was killed, I was 15. Not a day goes by without him in my thoughts. I have a son named after him. God, I just wish he were still here. I think you would have liked them, especially Freddy(your namesake), he is like you in a lot of ways. After 40 years we finally got some answers about your tour in Nam. Just 6 weeks ago, I came in touch with Eric Bergland, your friend and comrade in arms. He shared a lot with me about your time in Albany and in Nam. He has helped us get more closure with your death. After a long phone conversation, I came to understand a lot about all of this. It seems easy to see why you and Eric became friends, just talking to him, it is like I have know him a long time. I am sharing his story with everyone that I can who knew you. Well, brother I miss you, but I know that if you had made it home how difficult your life would have been.
