US Congressman. He served the state of Wyoming in the United States House of Representatives from January 3, 1969 to January 3, 1971. He earned degrees from Union College in Schenectady, New York in 1938 and Cornell University in 1939. He served as a consulting physicist and gunnery officer for the United States Navy during the Second World War. From 1957 to 1959, he served in the Wyoming House of Representatives. After his service in the state house, he served as the state Republican chairman from 1960 to 1964. He ran an unsuccessful United States Senate campaign against incumbent Democrat Gale McGee in 1964. Four years later, in 1968 he defeated Rep. William Henry Harrison in the Republican primary for Wyoming's At-large House seat and won the general election in a decisive fashion. He served in the House for one term until giving up his seat to make another unsuccessful bid for the United States Senate in 1970. After leaving office, he returned to the private sector, but remained active as a Republican political donor. The company, Wold Oil Properties, Inc., that he founded, is still operated by his family. The American Heritage Center at the University of Wyoming named him as the "Wyoming Citizen of the Century" in the minerals, gas, and oil category in 1999. He was the oldest living member of the United States House of Representatives, former or sitting, when he passed away at the age of 100 years old.
