Mr. Walter C. Scott, 83, of Shelbyville, one of the best known citizens of this part of Shelby County, died very suddenly this morning at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Isom Kelsay, 123 First Street.

Mr. Scott got up this morning as usual and dressed.

He was feeble and as was his custom he placed his hands on objects in going about the house. He reached to steady himself on a door when he fell. Mrs. Kelsay was quickly at his side.

Being unable to pick him up she called the neighbors and a doctor was summoned. In a very few minutes Mr. Scott was dead.

Very few men were familiar about town than was Mr. Scott.

He was born near Smithland on January 12, 1835.

His parents were Jehu and Martha Scott, who came to Shelby County from Virginia and Ohio at a very early day of the county. They were the parents of 10 children, Mr. Scott being the last of them.

He was married to Frances Bumgarner and to them were born 8 children only 2 of whom are now living, they being Jehu D. Scott, 208 West Hendricks Street and Mrs. Kelsay.

For many years Mr. Scott conducted a general store in Smithland and was regarded as a progressive enterprising merchant in that day. It was while he was living there that he was instrumental in organizing the Odd Fellows Lodge, now one of the most prosperous lodges of the order in the county.

During recent years he had lived in Shelbyville with his daughter.

Very few men had a wider acquaintance or more friends.

Funeral services will be held at the home Thursday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock, the Rev. H.N. Spear officiating.

Burial will be made in the Miller Cemetery.

Ralph J. Edwards being in charge.
