A solemn pontifical Mass for the Rev. John J. Quinn, M.S.C., of St. Joseph's Church, Providence Street, Natick, will be celebrated Monday at 10am in the church. Burial will be in St. Francis Cemetery, Pawtucket.
A priest for 54 years and one-time chaplain at the State Institutions, Father Quinn died yesterday in St. Joseph's Hospital, Providence, after a long illness.
The body will be transferred from the rectory to the church Sunday at 3pm where it will remain until Monday when a requiem high Mass will be sung for the children of the parish.
His last assignment was at the Natick parish where he had first served as a new priest in 1907. From 1949 until five years ago, he had been at St. Francis Church in Hillsgrove.
Born June 28, 1882, he was the son of the late John C. and Elizabeth (McGrath) Quinn of Nolan Street, Providence.
He was graduated from St. Patrick's Grammar School and LaSalle Academy, Providence. He attended St. Joseph's College in Watertown, N.Y. from 1900 to 1902 and the Pontifical Seminary in Rome from 1902 to 1907.
Father Quinn was ordained in Rome and celebrated his first Mass at St. Patrick's Church, Providence, on August 28, 1907. He was assigned to the Natick parish from 1907 to 1922, serving in that time as chaplain at the institutions.
From 1922 to 1931, he was at Sacred Heart Church in Watertown, N.Y., and subsequently spent eight years as chaplain at the Gabriels Sanitarium in Gabriels, N.Y., returning to the Providence Diocese and receiving assignment to St. Francis Church in Hillsgrove in 1949. He celebrated his 50th anniversary in the priesthood in 1957.
Father Quinn's survivors are three sisters, Sister M. Geraldine, R.S.M., of St. Edward's Convent, Pawtucket, and Mrs. Joseph A. Taber and Miss Elizabeth A. Quinn, both of Providence.
