José Vicente Féliz y Esquer was born at Álamos, Sonora, New Spain (México), about 1741. He was the son of José Féliz and Manuela Esquer. He married María Ignacia Manuela Piñuelas at Purísima Concepción church, Alamos, July 13, 1760. He volunteered for service in Alta California and accompanied the Anza Expedition in 1775. While en route, his wife died during childbirth at Mission San Javier del Bac, Sonora (now Arizona), October 24, 1775. In 1781 he was the cabo (corporal) in charge of the escoltas (escorts) at Mission San Gabriel and accompanied the pobladores to the site selected for the establishment of el Pueblo de la Reina de los Ángeles on September 4, 1781. He had retired from military service by 1798. José Vicente died at Santa Bárbara and was buried in the mission cemetery January 30, 1809 (BP Death 00127).
