Benjamin enrolled in the Union Army, Company C, 29th Missouri Infantry on August 13, 1862 in Farmington, Missouri. He left his company sick at Vicksburg, Mississippi on April 2, 1863 and died of dropsy on June 14, 1863 aboard the U.S. hospital steamer, the D.A. January, on the Mississippi River, at Benton Barracks. His body and a few possessions were returned to Madison County.
While no burial information has been found on Benjamin, his youngest son, or father, they were probably buried at the same cemetery in Madison County near Fredericktown, MO.
