Kay was born on September 2, 1926, in Portsmouth, New Hampshire. The daughter of Navy Pharmacy Mate Frank Grant and Theresa (Crowley) Grant, she grew up as a Navy child in Maine, New Hampshire, Virginia, Maryland, and California. She graduated from high school in Greenbelt, Maryland in 1944.
In 1946 she married Virgil Gaul. They raised their five children in Compton and Torrance, California. In 1977 she married her second husband, Robert (Bob) Sowell. Together they lived in Bellflower, Torrance, and Cerritos, California.
The center of Kay’s life was her family and her faith. In the course of time she was a store clerk, legal secretary, full-time mom, administrative assistant, Little League board member, and Pop Warner football team mom. She loved to travel, but was always happiest at home among those she loved.
After the death of her husband Bob in 1992, Kay moved from Bellflower to Murrieta. She later moved to Hemet to live near her daughter. In her later years, she was assisted in her own home by loving caregivers. For her final four years she lived in the very loving care of Edith Farris at the Agape Home for the Elderly in Wildomar, California, battling the Alzheimer’s disease that eventually took her from us.
Kay was loved by all who knew her and will be missed by all. She has gone now to the eternal peace that she always believed was waiting for her.
She was predeceased by her daughter Kathleen Drahnovsky, her stepdaughters Linda Zanetti and Tena Bowdish, and husbands Virgil Gaul and Robert Sowell. She is survived by her children Christine Pettit, Grant Gaul, Gregory Gaul, and Stephen Gaul; her stepdaughters Sharon Dutton, Lyn Fitkin, and Patty Strash; and 21 grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandson.
The funeral service will be held on Friday, February 3, at 10:30 a.m., at St. Martha's Catholic Church in Murrieta, California. A reception will follow at the church hall. Kay will be laid to rest next to her husband Robert Sowell and her daughter Kathy Drahnovsky at Forest Lawn Cemetery in Cypress, California, the following morning, February 4, at 11:00 a.m.
To those who touched her life, Kay’s family sends their thanks for your friendship and love.
