William F. Maxfield Sept. 10, 1937 - Jan. 8, 2017
Resident of Pleasant Hill
Surrounded by his loving and devoted family, Bill passed away peacefully at home after a three year battle with cancer.
Bill was born in Queens, New York on September 10, 1937 to John and Ruth Maxfield. He was raised on the East Coast living in both New York and Florida, graduating from New York's Westbury High School in 1955. After graduation, Bill served in the U.S. Navy from 1955-1958 aboard the USS George K. MacKenzie, DD-836. After discharge from the Navy,

Bill moved from Long Beach, CA to the Bay Area. He worked for four years as a maintenance machinist with research groups at the Lawrence Radiation Laboratory in Berkeley, CA where he was also a volunteer firefighter. Bill became a fulltime firefighter with the Mt. Diablo Fire District in 1964, the same year the Contra Costa County Consolidated Fire Protection District was created when Mt Diablo Fire and Central Fire merged. In the late 1960's, Bill became a Fire Investigator at the Administration Building where he met the love of his life, Barbara who worked in the front office. The unstoppable duo married in 1972 and with Barbara's support, Bill earned his Bachelor's Degree in Public Administration while working full time. Bill became the Fire Chief of the District in 1980, a position he held until his retirement in 1993. He was very proud to have served as Chairman of the Governor's Office of Emergency Services Fire & Rescue Advisory Committee, FIRESCOPE Board of Directors, and was a founding member and the first chair of the California Fire Fighters Joint Apprenticeship Committee.Following retirement from ConFire, Bill launched 9-1-1 Consulting Group which allowed him to continue in the profession he loved by conducting assessment panels, consulting on building and fire codes and serving in interim roles as Fire Marshal, Budget Officer and other administrative roles for many fire departments statewide. Along with consulting, Bill loved to travel the world with his family and friends, play golf, create beautiful stained glass artwork and read spy novels and political thrillers. Bill was always available to lend a helping hand and of course, to tell a good joke.

Bill is preceded in death by his parents and his sister June Cline (Phil). He is survived by his beloved wife Barbara, daughter Tori of Pleasant Hill, daughter PeggySue Wells of Indiana, son William F. Maxfield Jr. (Athena) of Laguna Niguel, CA and eight grandchildren. He is also survived by his brother Jack (Pat) of Sparks, NV and sister-in-law Janet Morrison of Martinez, nieces and nephews and many dear friends.

A Celebration of Life for Bill will be held Saturday March 4, 2017 at 1:00 p.m. at the Pleasant Hill Senior Center at 233 Gregory Ln, Pleasant Hill, CA. A reception will immediately follow at Zio Fraedo's Restaurant at 611 Gregory Ln, Pleasant Hill, CA.Donations in Bill's name may be made to Hospice of the East Bay or the One Hundred Club of Contra Costa County.
