John F . Duncan , retired president and CEO of Chrysler Captial Corporation, died Sunday (May 3, 1998) at his home. He was 73. Mr. Duncan , resident of Greenwich, for over 30 years, was the husband of Elizabeth Fitzgerald Duncan . He was born in Bristol, May 8, 1924, a son of the late Thomas and Margaret Swain Duncan . Mr. Duncan joined the army in 1943, interrupting his high school education in his junior year, to serve in the 34th Infantry of the U.S. Army in World War II. He was honorably discharged as a sergeant after being wounded in the battle of Monte Cassino in the Italian theater. He received the Purple Heart and was decorated with the Bronze Star. He continued his service in the war effort by promoting war bonds throughout the state of Connecticut. Upon his return from the war, he graduated from Bristol High School. Mr. Duncan went on to graduate from Boston University in 1948. Mr. Duncan began his career with General Electric Credit Corporations as a collector and rose through t he ranks from District Manager to Vice President of the Leasing and Industrial Loan Group. In 1974, he became President and CEO of International Paper Credit Corporation, growing the business to a multi- billion dollar leasing company through succeeding parent companies, E. F. Hutton Group and Chrysler Corporation. He retired in 1987 as President and Chief Executive Officer. Mr. Duncan was an avid golfer and a member of Innis Arden Golf Club in Old Greenwich and a parishioner of St. Catherine of Sienna Church in Riverside. Besides his wife of 49 years, he is survived by four sons, two daughters, five grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Funeral will be Wednesday, 9 a.m. from the Dunn Funeral Home, 191 West St., Bristol, to St. Joseph Church for a Mass at 10 a.m. Burial will be in St. Joseph Cemetery, Bristol. Friends may call at the funeral home Today, 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. Donations can be made to the American Cancer Society. A memorial mass will be Friday, May 8, 10 a.m. at St. Catherine of Sienna Church, in Riverside.
