Three of novels were adapted into the feature films "The Hustler" (1959), "The Man Who Fell to Earth" (1976) and "The Color of Money" (1984). The 2020 mini-series The Queen's Gambit is based on his novel of the same name. He also was a Professor of English literature at Ohio University, in Athens, Ohio.
