After graduating from Alamo High School, she attended Purdue University for a semester, then transferred to the Indiana Business College in Indianapolis, from which she graduated. She worked in the War Department during World War II, and after the war, met Richard (Dick) Coon when he returned from the war. They married in 1946 and owned and operated two hamburger stands - The White Cabin - in Lebanon. During that time, they had their first child, Linda (Stevenson). They moved to Lafayette and had their second child, Fred.
Dick became a teacher and later the principal of Southwestern High School. Mary went to work at Purdue and was secretary to the Dean of Students for 17 years, until she retired. Mary loved Purdue and Purdue men's basketball. She volunteered over 9000 hours to Lafayette Home Hospital and the American Red Cross. Mary moved to Connecticut on Memorial Day, 2015, to be close to her son, Fred. Her daughter and her husband, Jim, currently reside in Oregon. Mary is survived by her daughter, Linda, her son, Fred, their spouses, eight grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, and her niece, Yvonne Lorber, in addition to many of the friends she made over the years.
A visitation and light snacks have been scheduled for Friday, January 20, 2017, from 12:00-1:30 PM at the Hippensteel Funeral Home in Lafayette, followed by a funeral service. A private burial will follow in Tippecanoe Memory Gardens.
