Lula Mozell Bates was born in Selma, Dallas County, Alabama on December 18, 1869, to David Monroe Bates and Martha (MATTIE) Rebecca Poole Bates. Her parents had 7 children, 3 died as young children before 1880 in Tipton County, Tennessee. There was a yellow fever epidemic in Tipton County, Tennessee around 1878, however, it is not known if this was the cause of death of the 3 Bates children. Lula had 3 siblings that lived to adulthood: General Lowell Bates, Thomas Jefferson Bates, and James Bates. James' grave has not been found.

The 1870 census shows the family living in Autauga County, Alabama. By the 1880 census, they live in Tipton County, Tennessee where their youngest son, James, was born in 1779. By 1883, they live in Arkansas and David Monroe Bates drowned in a pond at his sawmill in Arkansas, probably Arkansas City, Arkansas. It is unknown where he is buried. After David's death, Mattie and the children move to Texas. In 1888, they are living in Ellis County, Texas.

On March 13, 1888 in Ellis County, Texas, Lula's mother, Mattie, a widow, married Milton Hibler, a widower. George Hibler, Milton's son, had been at another farm working and hadn't met his father's new wife. When he arrived at his father's he met his step-mother and her daughter, Lula Bates. He and Lula fell in love and were married on January 7, 1890 in Johnson County, Texas.

George and Lula lived on the Hibler farm next to Milton and Martha in Ellis County, Texas close to Maypearl. They had 4 children: Arthur Van Cleave Hibler, Ethel Hibler Jackson Phinney Morrison, Reuel Rupert (Doc) Hibler, and Odessa (Toots) Hibler Phinney.

In 1916, George and Lula and their 4 children moved to a farm outside of Denton in Denton County, Texas. In 1919, Milton died and Mattie moved to Denton to live with Lula and George. Mattie died in 1921 and George died in 1938. Lula then moved to Graham, Texas and lived with her daughter, Toots. She would spend a few months a year with each of her children. She passed away July 9, 1951 while visiting her daughter, Ethel, in Mathis, Nueces County, Texas. Her body was sent back to Denton and she was buried next to George.
