Robert J. Frey, age 88, of Edwardsville, Illinois died at 4:15 a.m. Sunday, January 1, 2017, at Liberty Village of Maryville. Bob retired as night superintendant after 40 years from Amoco Refinery in Wood River. He was born April 11, 1928, in Edwardsville, Illinois the son of the late Robert & Mary (Sommer) Frey and a step-mother, Lillian (Darling) Frey.
He married JoAnn Wayne on May 30, 1950. She preceded him in death on March 12, 1988. He later married Margaret (Strohmeier) Schmitt on October 15, 1989. Besides his wife Margaret he is survived by 2 sons, Richard Frey & wife Janice of Glen Carbon and Marshall Frey & wife Dolores of Atlanta, Georgia; 1 daughter, Nancy Patterson of Marine; 1 step daughter, Pattie Stratmann & husband Stephen of Edwardsville; 7 grandchildren; 11 great grandchildren; 1 sister, Ruth Churchich of Edwardsville.
He was preceded in death by 2 sisters, Irene Fitzpatrick and Celeste Frey. He was a member of St. Boniface Catholic Church and the Edwardsville Knights of Columbus. Robert was very active in Edwardsville Little League and instrumental in building Hoppe Field. Along with his wife Margaret he liked to square dance with the Hoedowners.
Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, January 4, 2017, at Weber & Rodney Funeral Home. Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, January 5, 2017, at St. Boniface Catholic Church with The Very Reverend Jeff Goeckner officiating. Interment will be at Calvary Cemetery in Glen Carbon. Memorials may be given to St. Boniface Catholic Church or the American Heart Association.
