John Griffin, at age 17, moved with his parents and siblings from Opelika, Ala., to near Quanah, Tex., in 1889. He opened his first business, a "gents furnishings" store, in Claude in 1892. He later moved to Clarendon and then Amarillo where he was in the grocery business. He was a merchant, property owner, and constant Amarillo trade booster. He joined the Amarillo Elks in 1904 and was an active member for over fifty years. He was a life-long bachelor.
