He wrote on the subjects of extrasensory perception, mental telepathy, metaphysics, paranormal experiences, conspiracy theory, sex, drugs and psychology. He is best known for "The Illuminatus! Trilogy" (1975), a cult classic about a secret global society. The novel won the 1986 Prometheus Hall of Fame Award and has been in publication for over 30 years. In the 1960's he was an editor at Playboy magazine and wrote features on pop culture in a science-fiction way for the psychedelic crowd. In 1975, he co-wrote "The Eye in the Pyramid," "The Golden Apple" and "Leviathan" all published by Dell Science Fiction. In later years, he began writing nonfiction books and had a best seller with "Cosmic Trigger" a bizarre autobiography. He also founded the Institute for the Study of the Human Future and was the director of the Committee for Surrealist Investigation of Claims of the Normal.
