Hilda was born Hiltje Sjoerdsma in December 1882 in the country village of Ee, located in the former -until 1984- municipality Oostdongeradeel, in the extreme northeastern part of the Dutch northern province Friesland, the last of five children and second daughter of Piebe Sjoerdsma (38 years old, merchant) and Trijntje van Hoog (of High). Source: scan of her birth certificate. Hiltje was named after her maternal grandmother Hiltje Willems Viersma. After 1970 Hiltje became a rather rare given name in the Netherlands.
Her great grandfather Pybe Sjoerds adopted in 1811 the surname Sjoerdsma, a so-called patronymical surname: "Sjoerds" means child of -father- Sjoerd, a Frisian given name, "ma" was added to create a surname.

Hiltje had in Ee the following siblings:
* Sjoerd (George), July 22, 1873;
* Remmeren (Rimmeren), August 26, 1875;
* Grietje (Maggie, Grace), October 5;
* Willem (William), January 15, 1880;

Her father Piebe Sjoerdsma was from 1873 until 1880 a laborer and in 1882 a merchant.

On 16 May 1890 her brother P Sjoerd Sjoerdsma (17 years old, laborer) arrived on the S.S. Rotterdam of the Holland America Line (HAL) at the port of his destination New York, Castle Garden. On April 10, 1891 Hiltje Sjoerdsma (9), her father Pieter (?!) Sjoerdsma (46, merchant), mother Trijntje (47), and siblings Remmerer (15), Grietje (13) and Willem (11) arrived on the S.S. Obdam (of the HAL too) at the port of New York, Castle Garden. They departed on March 31, 1891 from Ee, municipality Dongeradeel, province Friesland, Netherlands. Their destination was the Dutch truck farmers settlement of Roseland, since 1892 a southern district of Chicago, Illinois, USA. Her mother Trijntje was then a peddler (marsdrager, venter) and her brother Remmeren a shoemaker's hand.

On April 26, 1905 Hilda Sjoerdsma married in Chicago, Cook County, Illinois at the age of 22 years the two years older Louis J De Vries, who was also born in the northeastern part of the Netherlands.

In April 1910 Hilda P (27 years old, born in Holland, immigrated in 1891), her husband Louis J De Vries (29, Holland, immigrated in 1893, gardener at a truck farm), and their daughter Theresa L (4, Illinois) were living on a rented farm at 9028 Wentworth Gate Avenue, Calumet Township, Ward 32, in southeastern Chicago, Cook County, Illinois.

On September 12, 1918 they were living at 9026 Wentworth Avenue in Chicago, when her husband Louis was administrated on a WW I Draft Registration Card.

In January 1920 Hilda (37, immigrated in 1896 [hasto be: 1891]), her husband Louis De Vries (39, immigrated in 1893, clerk at a store), their children Tracy (13), John (9, Illinois), Peter (6, Illinois), Harriet (4, Illinois), Louis (3, Illinois), and Hilda (1, Illinois) were living in a rented house at 10030 Perry Avenue in Ward 9 of Chicago, Cook County, Illinois.

In April 1930 Hilda (47, immigrated in 1892 [has to be: 1891]), her husband Louis Devries (49, immigrated in 1893, owner of a produce company), and their children John (19, clerk at a general office), Peter (17, farm laborer), Harriet (14) and Louis (13) were living in their own house, worth $8,0000, at 10119 Wentworth Avenue in Ward 9 of Chicago, Cook, Illinois.

In July 1937 her husband, handyman Louis De Vries, died at the age of 57 years in the city of Blue Island, located immediately south of Chicago, Cook County, Illinois. In May 1951 widow Hilda died at the age of 68 years in Chicago, likely ad her home, 138 West 111th Place, Cook County, Illinois.
